Kyle Lemargie

Kyle Lemargie has 10 years of experience in the Southeast Asia region dealing with human rights, democracy and development issues. Lemargie currently serves as program manager for Southeast Asia. He has designed and implemented programs of democracy and governance in Indonesia, East Timor, the Philippines and Thailand. His election experience in the field includes election administration and civil society support on historic transitional elections in Aceh, Thailand, and Indonesia, as well as long-term observer experience with the Carter Center in Timor-Leste’s 2001 and 2002 Constituent Assembly and Presidential Elections.

Lemargie previously worked as a a program manager in the Smithsonian Institution’s Department of Anthropology bringing together researchers, donors,  government representatives and community groups to produce exhibitions and publications on Asian cultural heritage. In addition to program management, Lemargie has worked as an Indonesia-based field researcher for the World Bank on poverty alleviation and economic development issues. During the fall of Indonesia’s New Order regime, Lemargie worked in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor as a research assistant on China and Indonesia policy which was his introduction to the study of transitional democracy and the politics of the region. He has authored and contributed to many reports and statements issued by IFES, the World Bank, Carter Center, the U.S. Department of State and the Smithsonian Institution’s Asian Cultural History Program.

Lemargie possess a B.A. in Political Science from Washington State University and a M.A in International Relations from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He was also a Fulbright-Hayes Fellow in 2005 researching 2005 local elections in Indonesia.
