Vasu Mohan

Vasu Mohan has over 13 years of experience in democracy, governance and human rights programming in Asia with a focus on political, social and legal empowerment of the disenfranchised – youth, women, ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities. He has been with IFES since 2001 and supervised programs and field offices in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor Leste. He currently serves as Deputy Regional Director for Asia.

Mohan was responsible for IFES' Women’s Legal Rights Initiative and Garima Projects in India (2003 - 2011), a USAID-funded program on violence against women and gender equality/women’s empowerment, which focused on expanding the dialogue on women’s rights and legal resources available to women. He has also served in various voluntary capacities related to women’s empowerment work; this includes serving as Member of the Board of Directors for the Tahirih Justice Center, a non-profit working to protect immigrant women and girls seeking justice in the United States from gender-based violence.

Mohan is currently working on two publications, a book on Muslim women's empowerment in India featuring interviews with women who are agents of change in their community, and the translation of Vignettes from the History of Sri Lanka from Tamil into English. Mohan has a master's degree in environmental engineering sciences from the University of Florida, Gainesville, with a specialization in sustainable development, and a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, India. He is fluent in Tamil and Hindi and conversant in Sinhala and Urdu.
