    Emerging from decades of New Order authoritarian rule in 1998, Indonesia entered an era of bold reform characterized by democracy-building. Indonesia is seen today as a vibrant regional example of democracy working to achieve compromise and political stability. Since the beginning of democratic reforms in 1998, IFES has been involved in governance, rule of law, elections and civil society in Indonesia. In light of challenges uncovered during the 2009 general election, IFES has been responsive to the needs of the government, civil society and policymakers.
