    On September 19, 2006, Thailand’s military seized administrative control from the elected civilian government, abrogated the 1997 Constitution, and formed an interim government under an interim constitution. Shortly thereafter, IFES began programming in Thailand directed at assisting the quick return of government to civilian control through credible national elections.

Civic education deals with broader concepts underpinning a democratic society such as the respective roles and responsibilities of citizens, government, political and special interests, the mass media, and the business and non-profit sectors, as well as the significance of periodic and competitive elections.

Project In Brief

This project’s main components included a pre-election technical assessment; work with civil society to support domestic monitoring of the Constitutional Referendum; targeted voter education for the parliamentary elections in rural villages of the North and Northeast; public forums to solicit input on electoral reform and political finance; and technical advisory services that ultimately included the request-driven provision of information to the Election Commission of Thailand and to various stakeholders engaged in the legal drafting process.
