IFES has been lending support to Moldova's Central Election Commission. Staffan Darnolf, IFES chief of party in Moldova, comments:
"Moldova, the poorest country in Europe, is holding early Parliamentary elections on July 29th. These elections follow on the heel of the much-controversial April 5 elections that were plagued with accusations of vote rigging and resulted in demonstrations organized via Twitter and other social-networking sites. Since then, the political climate has remained tense and the campaign rhetoric confrontational. In this environment and facing a significantly compressed electoral timeline, the Central Electoral Commission, with IFES’ support, have trained its 20,000 polling officials to man the 1,987 polling stations on Election Day. The process will be intensively scrutinized by hundreds of international election observers and thousands of domestic and party observers. Interim results are expected in the early hours of August 1."
