The Palestinian Central Elections Commission announced today that they will not be able to hold the January 2010 presidential and legislative elections as called for by presidential decree.

Vladimir Pran, IFES chief of party in the West Bank/Gaza, comments:

"Today’s announcement by the Palestinian Central Elections Commission (CEC) that they will be unable to implement the January 2010 presidential and legislative elections must have been difficult for them to make. Yet, it was a responsible conclusion since Hamas banned the CEC’s activities in Gaza, making it impossible to fulfill certain necessary preconditions to conduct legitimate elections, such as creating a voter registry."
