Guinea went to the polls on Sunday, June 27 to participate in the country's first free election.
Elizabeth Cote, IFES chief of party in Guinea, comments on Election Day and what comes next:
“Election Day went well in Guinea. As in every election, there were glitches, but the morale was high and Guineans were excited about the possibility of expressing their will through the ballot. In fact, so far, it seems voter turnout was around 75%. We must now hope that the results transmission process goes smoothly. As of now, delays have been caused by rain, the fact that the poll workers have limited technical expertise and that the envelopes for sealing ballots arrived in-country later than expected, leaving insufficient time to train poll workers on their use. Hopefully, Guineans will be able to get through the results tabulation process and then the adjudication of complaints with the same enthusiasm that made Election Day go well.”
