Sophie Lagueny, IFES chief of party in Haiti, comments on Haiti’s second round of presidential and legislative elections, which took place on March 20, 2011:
"As the international and national observation missions have reported, the second round of presidential and legislative elections in Haiti went much better than the first round."
"In spite of isolated and localized incidents of violence, and a certain number of polling stations receiving incomplete voting kits, thus delaying their opening, the election was successful overall. The poll workers were much better organized this time around and their performance was much improved, and political party representatives and observers were seen in large numbers everywhere. There were also much fewer complaints from voters claiming not to have found their names on the list."
"This is evidence that the ‘where to vote’ campaign was a huge success. The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) call center received more than 260,000 calls, and more than 1,000,000 sms were sent. The preliminary results are expected on March 31st, the period of claims and their review from April 1st to 15th, and the final results on April 16th."
