IFES and Indonesia's National Election Commission agreed to work closely to prepare Indonesia for legislative and presidential elections in 2009. H. Abdul Hafiz Anshary, chairman of the Komisi Permilihan Umum, and Adam Schmidt, IFES chief of party in Indonesia, signed a memorandum of understanding on March 18 in Jakarta. Under the agreement, IFES will advise and support the election commission, known by the acronym KPU, as it carries out the technical and operational aspects of the election. This is expected to include activities such as voter registry management, electoral districting, legal advocacy and public opinion surveys. IFES established its Indonesia office a decade ago and has maintained a Jakarta presence since that time. IFES' work in Indonesia is focused on building a transparent and effective legal framework for elections and improving the way elections are administered. This has included projects that strengthen media coverage of elections and governance and increase public awareness of election procedures. In order to do this, IFES developed strong partnerships with key institutions within the election commission, Indonesian government, partner organizations and civil society. IFES' work in Indonesia is funded by multiple funders, including the United States Agency for International Development.
