The second in a series of informational papers on the Lebanese election covers the mapping of candidates and lists by districts. Richard Chambers, IFES country director in Lebanon, presented this paper at a conference on the election that took place in Beirut today—The June 2009 Elections: Issues and Challenges. Carnegie Middle East Center (CMEC), the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS) and the International Crisis Group (ICG) were the other participants.

H.E. Minister of Interior Ziyad Baroud delivered the keynote address. He noted that for the upcoming election, “simple election issues which are standard in other countries are being applied for the first time in Lebanon.” The Minister highlighted achievements such as the holding of the elections on one day, the creation of the Supervisory Commission on the Electoral Campaign and the publication of the voter register. The online version of the voter register, for example, has resulted in 4.7 million visits to the Ministry of Interior website and 250,000 corrections to the register, according to Minister Baroud.

The first briefing paper issued by IFES-Lebanon on the Lebanese election provided information on Lebanon and Beirut’s voting districts as well as the distribution of parliamentary seats by confession and district. It can be accessed here.
