On August 20, 2009, Afghanistan headed to the polls for the second time since the fall of the Taliban. IFES has worked in Afghanistan since 2002, supporting electoral law development, voter registration, election administration, poll worker training, capacity building, media monitoring, results reporting, elections logistics and civic education.

One of our projects has been working with the Afghan Women's Network (AWN) to put together the 5 Million Women Campaign (5MWC). The 5MWC strives to increase the participation of Afghan women in the political process. For more on this initiative, please click here.

Homeyra Mokhtarzada, program manager for the Middle East and North Africa, was recently on Foreign Exchange with Daljit Dhaliwal talking about the candidates, the fact that there has been a noticeable shift towards the garnering of support based on policy platforms instead of personality, and the role of women in the elections, among other topics.
