Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation and the third largest democracy, went to the polls on Wednesday, July 8 to elect a new president. Kyle Lemargie, IFES Program Manager for Southeast Asia, and others of the IFES-Indonesia team served as observers. In a predominantly Christian area of the archipelago, Lemargie snapped this photograph of a poll worker who was wearing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights along with an Islamic head covering, or jilbab. Knowing or unknowingly, she served as a sort of visual summary statement for the unique equation that is democratic, pluralistic Indonesia.
