Almami Cyllah, IFES regional director for Africa, comments on the November 29, 2009 election in Equatorial Guinea and the November 27 and 28, 2009 elections in Namibia.
Equatorial Guinea
"Elections offer countries the opportunity of a fresh start. In the case of Equatorial Guinea, which has a history of violence and political instability, these polls offer the country the opportunity to embark on a democratic path. The international community can help move this process along by reminding Equatorial Guinea’s political leaders that they are being watched. We can also remind the country’s population that boosting its civil society and participating in the democratic process, including elections, can help speed democratic reform."
Namibia
"The people of Namibia and the world at large are hoping the elections will be held in a free and transparent manner that meets the expectations of its citizens. Namibia needs to continue the process of democratic development as its size and resources make it an important actor in Southern Africa and Africa in general. Namibia and South Africa could have a powerful impact on the continent if they joined their voices and spoke about the importance of upholding democratic values in Africa."
