The 3rd session of the UN Conference of the State Parties took place in Doha, Qatar from November 9 – 13, 2009. State parties to the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), which entered into force in 2005, gathered to adopt a monitoring mechanism for the Convention. The conference brought together 144 state parties in addition to numerous NGOs, media and other organizations. Magnus Ohman, IFES political finance advisor, and Hani Zainulbhai, associate for political finance, joined partner organization Transparency International at the Conference as part of its UNDEF-funded effort to raise consciousness of UNCAC. More specifically, IFES has focused its work on article 7(3), which calls on state parties to enhance the transparency of political party and candidate funding. At the Forum for Civil Society Organizations on November 11th, Ohman presented IFES’ work in relation to the article, the culmination of which is the just released book, Political Finance Regulation: The Global Experience.
