IFES has begun a new project in Nigeria to help the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepare for the 2011 elections. In the first phase of this project IFES will be deploying voter registration experts to Nigeria to work with INEC officials to improve the quality of the existing voter registry. To achieve this goal, IFES will cooperate with both the INEC headquarters and the state offices, which play an integral role throughout the electoral process and particularly in voter registration and polling operations. IFES will also help improve the country’s election dispute resolution system by building the capacity of judges and lawyers to administer and facilitate the election dispute resolution (EDR) process. Additionally, IFES will work with civil society organizations (CSOs) to build their capacity in monitoring three key areas: EDR, election violence, and political finance.
