Philippine electoral reform groups pose with COMELEC officials after the presentation of reports and awarding of plaques of appreciation that highlighted their crucial role in what is perceived to be a generally successful conduct of elections.

The Philippine Commission on Elections (COMELEC) held a meeting on July 27 for the accredited election watchdogs and other local organizations that monitored the recently conducted May 2010 elections. Included in this reunion were two of IFES-Philippines’ partners—the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao-based Citizens CARE and the Lawyers Network for Truthful Elections.

At the gathering organized by the COMELEC, the Commission recognized the groups’ contribution to the successful conduct of the elections. The election watchdogs also had the opportunity to present their observation reports en banc on the recent elections. The election reports are expected to help the Commission further improve future electoral processes in the country.

After the presentation of reports, COMELEC handed out plaques of appreciation to the attendees in recognition for their invaluable support and active participation in the conduct of the May 2010 elections and for helping “ensure the success of the first-ever fully automated electoral exercise in the country.”

Other presenters and awardees at the meeting included the Cebu Citizens Movement for Involvement and Maturation for People’s Empowerment and Liberation, the National Social Action Council, One Vote Movement, and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting.
