Dr. S.Y. Quraishi, chief commissioner of the Election Commission of India, visited IFES headquarters in Washington on February 22 and led a discussion of India’s electoral system with democracy-development and elections leaders.
Quraishi was joined by IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney, Judy Van Rest, executive vice president of the International Republican Institute, Ellen Weintraub of the Federal Election Commission and Ken Wollack, president of the National Democratic Institute.
Quraishi’s visit came on the heels of the Election Commission of India’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration in January which marked 60 years since the commission’s founding. Mr. Sweeney had the honor to attend the event in New Delhi.
