Reflecting on the Role of Media in Elections
May 14, 2013
Throughout the electoral and political process, media can shed light on candidates and political parties; educate voters on key procedures; and inform the public of electoral developments. Media plays an influential role in elections and is crucial for the development of democracy. IFES helps journalists and election management bodies (EMBs) around the world strengthen their relationship. IFES does this by training journalists and EMB; establishing media centers; and using traditional and social media to better communicate with citizens. These photos capture the role of media during the electoral process.

A Vote Despite All Odds
May 14, 2013
IFES began working in Mali in 2011 on a project providing election assistance to the country’s election management bodies. The March 2012 military coup effectively brought an abrupt halt to the 2012 electoral process and IFES suspended all project activities for nine months. As the country recovers from the crisis, new elections are scheduled for July 2013 and IFES has renewed its assistance to the election management bodies and civil society groups involved in civic and voter education. The new project has a reconciliation component since the crisis provoked a much deeper rift between Malian ethnic groups who traditionally lived together in the North.
