Registering Marginalized Populations to Vote in Nepal

Elections in Liberia: 2014 Special Senatorial Elections

Originally slated for October 14, 2014, Liberia's special senatorial elections were moved to December 20 due to the Ebola outbreak. Amid this public health crisis, Liberians will head to the polls to elect half of the country's 30-member Senate. With the state of emergency imposed by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf expiring in November, the conduct of this election will be an important marker of the progress made in the fight against Ebola.

November's elections will once again feature democratic and liberal pro-European choice parties against the leading Communist Party, who governed the country from 1998 to 2009. As no single party is expected to gain a majority in the Parliament, November's elections will again result in a critical period of post-election coalition building to form the country's next government.

Tunisia Reopens Media Center for Presidential Elections

On November 20, 2014, Tunisia’s High Independent Authority for Elections (ISIE) held a press conference to reopen its Media Center for the November 23 presidential election. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) worked closely with its ISIE partners in conceptualizing and creating the Center for the October parliamentary elections and the November presidential vote. The Media Center serves as a platform for the ISIE to communicate election related information to citizens, journalists, international organizations and other relevant stakeholders. IFES Experts Speak on U.S. Capitol Hill

November 20, 2014

On November 13 and 14, experts from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) were called on to speak on Capitol Hill. On Thursday, November 13, Senior Gender Specialist Jessica Huber was invited by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) to speak as part of the World of Women for World Peace conference. Huber was joined by other distinguished panelists.

On Friday, IFES Deputy Regional Director for Europe and Asia Gavin Weise provided a briefing to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (also known as the Helsinki Commission) about Ukraine’s recent parliamentary elections. He highlighted the conduct and results of the elections. He was joined by representatives from IFES partners the International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute, as well as the Ukrainian citizen network OPORA.

Preparing for Ukraine’s Historic Parliamentary Poll

November 20, 2014

On October 26, Ukrainians went to the polls in early parliamentary elections; their second nationwide vote following the flight of former President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014. With assistance from IFES, the Central Election Commission planned, organized and carried out an ambitious training program for election commissioners throughout the country. Both domestic and international observers deemed these elections to be largely successful.
