By Eberhard LaueLast week's spirited discussion on democracy at the World Economic Forum in Davos highlighted a growing sense of anxiety regarding the future of democracy and the rise of anti-democratic tendencies. Panelists identified several challenges to democratic progress, including a prolonged economic crisis, the exponential growth of technology, increased disparities in wealth and low levels of confidence in existing models of democratic governance.

After many years of advocacy, women's groups and activists watched as the Parliament of Papua New Guinea (PNG) voted to amend the constitution and create an additional 22 reserved seats for women. The 22 seats will be added to the current seats in parliament, held by 108 men and only one woman.

Women take part in advocacy training in Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea achieved a major milestone on November 24, 2011, with the passage of a bill that allows seats in the national parliament to be reserved for women. The Equality and Participation Bill, however, can only be implemented if an amendment to the Organic Law on Elections is also passed. To help local women's organizations in their efforts to get this amendment passed, IFES implemented a training program to boost their skills in professional lobbying.

IFES administered BRIDGE training for election officials across Senegal Ahead of the Senegal presidential election in February, the African nation has been making headlines as President Abdoulaye Wade insists on a third term in office, despite being limited to two. Program Officer for West Africa and BRIDGE Coordinator Kamissa Camara recently spent six weeks against this political backdrop in Senegal administering the BRIDGE program, a modular professional development program which puts an emphasis on electoral processes.
