Engaging Future Voters

Campaign Finance Oversight in the 2009 Presidential Elections in Afghanistan

In this paper, Dr Magnus Ohman analyzes the campaign finance oversight system put in place by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) for the 2009 Presidential elections. Specifically, the paper looks at the political finance regulations that were in place, the preparations made by the IEC in relation to campaign finance prior to the elections, actual reported financial transactions, and recommendations for reform among other issues.

Promoting Women’s Political Participation in South Asia: Afghanistan, Nepal and India

On 2 June 2010, IFES chaired a panel discussion at InterAction's 2010 annual Forum titled "Promoting Women’s Political Participation in South Asia." Empowerment, be it economic, social, or political, is key to improving the status of women. Increased active participation in the public sphere and political life complements economic sufficiency and enables women to gain full citizenship. South Asia provides a fertile source of experiences in this area and offers relevant learning that can benefit gender programming in other regions.

AfghanistanVotes.com, a website based in Afghanistan that provides information about democracy and upcoming elections, is now producing pamphlets with the most popular information featured on the site. The goal of these pamphlets is to make the information available to Afghans who might not have internet access or who might not yet know about AfghanistanVotes.com.
