IFES organized the construction of wheelchair ramps in nine Armenian polling sites with USAID funds. This ramp was built in Gyumri, a city with many citizens who were injured by an earthquake in 1988.

Armenia’s last presidential election, held on February 19, 2008, resulted in a series of protests in Yerevan’s Freedom Square from demonstrators who alleged the election, won by then-Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan, was flawed. Police and state security units eventually dispersed the demonstrations by force.

Symposium on Electoral Legislation in Armenia

Improvement in the Armenian Electoral Process

Which were the major problems of the presidential elections in Armenia and what lessons could the government and people of Armenia take from these elections? These were the questions that were answered by Anthony Bowyer, Eurasia and Asia Program Manager at IFES, who notes that despite serious frauds taken place in 16% of the precincts, serious improvement in the electoral process can be observed compared to previous elections.

Country In Brief

Election law reform in anticipation of the 2012 National Assembly election took place amidst high political tension in Armenia. In May 2011, the Armenian National Assembly approved a revised electoral code which was signed by President Serzh Sargsyan in June 2011.

 

Despite this new legal reform effort, several outstanding legal electoral issues remain, such as improving standards of election dispute resolution, campaign finance regulations/enforcement and election system management.
