Ireland Constitution and Government

Published by Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Dublin in February of 1995, “Ireland: Constitution and Government” outlines the major players in Irish politics in this educational article to the citizens of Ireland. The roles of the President, legislature, government, and Constitution are outlined as well as information regarding the Irish electoral system. Also included is a chart displaying the strength of political parties in the Dail (lower house of Irish Parliament) after each General Election from 1922-1992.

European Parliament

The leaflet entitled, “European Parliament: How Ireland’s Representatives are Elected,” was published in September of 1994 by the Irish Department of the Environment. It provides Irish voters and potential candidates with the structure and system of the European Parliament in regards to Irish representation and participation. This leaflet further provides the requirements necessary for being one of the 15 Irish Representatives in the European Parliament as well as examples of legislation further explaining the European Parliament elections system.

The Referendum in Ireland

Produced by Ireland’s Department of the Environment, the leaflet entitled “The Referendum in Ireland” provides a guide to the process of constitutional amendments following a referendum in Ireland. Published in September of 1994, this leaflet lists the 11 times since 1972 the Irish constitution has been reformed and the requirements of such an event happening again. Issues such as participation, procedure, conduct, and validation are covered to better inform the Irish public.

The Register of Electors

“The Register of Electors” is a leaflet issued by the Irish Department of the Environment in September of 1994. In order to better educate Irish potential voters, this leaflet provides instructions on voting registration and the specific conditions necessary to vote in Ireland (age, citizenship, and residency). Also included is a brief overview of the preparation of the Irish voting Register which includes house-to-house information gathering by the Registration Authority.
