On June 7, Mexican citizens will head to the polls to elect 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of Congress), state legislatures, local councils and Governors in some states.

In January 2014, the Mexican Congress instituted a slate of historic reforms that, among other things, allowed independent candidates to participate in elections and created the National Electoral Institute (INE) to replace the Federal Electoral Institute as the country’s election management body. The June 7 vote will be the first test for these new reforms and the INE.
