On November 13 and 14, experts from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) were called on to speak on Capitol Hill. On Thursday, November 13, Senior Gender Specialist Jessica Huber was invited by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) to speak as part of the World of Women for World Peace conference.

While confidentiality and security are critical, elections can be vulnerable to security threats against participants, infrastructure, information and materials. Election security is more than just having police and security officials present around polling stations, it also entails the implementation of security measures during all phases of the electoral process.

Since 2000, with the support of USAID, IFES has conducted over 20 Democracy Camps across Kyrgyzstan. Ninth- and tenth-grade participants learn democratic values, leadership skills, teamwork, their role as citizens, and how to advocate for change in their society. In 2009, over 2,600 students applied to take part in the camps.

IFES staff members in Afghanistan capture images of Election Day in Kabul. On August 20, millions of Afghans went to the polls to cast their votes for president and provincial council. This was the second set of elections held since the fall of the Taliban. Preliminary results of the elections will be announced on August 25, 2009.
