The International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) presentation of the 2014 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards took place on October 1 at the Washington Marriot at Metro Center in Washington, D.C. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and Venezuelan opposition leader and Congresswoman Maria Corina Machado received the Manatt awards for their dedication to democracy and human rights. Unable to leave the country due to a ban from the Venezuelan regime, Machado’s son Henrique Sosa Machado, and the former President of Colombia, Andres Pastara, received the award on her behalf.

Kiki McLean, public affairs and political strategist and Senior Adviser to the 2008 Hillary Clinton for President Campaign, served as Master of Ceremonies. Former IFES Board Chairman Peter Kelly and former Vice Chairman Bill Hybl were also honored for their decades of service to IFES and the cause of freedom and democracy as they stepped down from their leadership positions on the IFES Board of Directors.
