Arguments and Friends: The Voice of Debate Participants
IFES’ 2010 University Debate Club was the first debate club formed in Afghanistan. The aim of the program is to foster a culture of debate based on the British Parliamentary model and to give Afghan youth the opportunity to enhance their public speaking, research, and critical thinking skills, as well as their self-confidence. Two years after its initial launch it had spread to more than 20 universities.
The program was so successful there are now two independent debate societies; one of which is providing volunteers to observer the April 5th elections.
Listen to the voices of Nasser Naimi, Mansur Shah and Zabihullah Barakzai about the impact the clubs had on them.
