In this edition of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems' (IFES) "Dialogues on Democracy," IFES Editorial and Communications Manager Adam Gallagher speaks with IFES Vice President of Programs Michael Svetlik about the challenges facing democracy promotion, its role in U.S. foreign policy and and the inextricable connection between hard power and soft power. In his role at IFES, Svetlik provides policy and programming guidance to IFES' international operations, which currently include electoral assistance and democratic institution building in over 30 countries.
