IFES President and CEO to Testify on Tunisia’s Transition
On Tuesday, July 14, International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) President and CEO Bill Sweeney will testify before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs’ Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa on “Tunisia’s Fragile Democratic Transition.” Since 2011, IFES has worked with the Tunisian election commission, various components of the Tunisian Government, political parties and civil society to help secure the fundamental human and political rights that so many Tunisians earnestly and rightly demanded during the uprising that sparked the Arab Spring. President Sweeney has made several trips to the country during this period, most recently for the first-round presidential election in November 2014 that led to the first direct election of a President in Tunisia’s history.
Although Tunisia has made major democratic strides in recent years, recent terrorist attacks on popular tourist destinations have threatened the country’s stability and security. International Republican Institute President Mark Green, National Democratic Institute Senior Associate and Regional Director Leslie Campbell and Washington Institute for Near East Policy Richard Borrow Fellow Aaron Zelin will join President Sweeney to discuss Tunisia’s transition.
