IFES Celebrates International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Published

With more than 476 million Indigenous Peoples living across 90 countries, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is a time to celebrate and bring awareness to the rights of Indigenous Peoples everywhere. One of the objectives of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) strategic plan is to support all people to safely participate in civic and political life on an equal basis – this objective specifically mentions and prioritizes inclusion of Indigenous Peoples.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, existing barriers to political inclusion have been exacerbated for Indigenous Peoples. Ahead of the 2020 general elections in Bolivia, IFES collaborated with the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and Indigenous People’s organizations to adapt the poll worker training curriculum to respond to the pandemic. These consultations resulted in the development of animated training videos and translation of electoral guides for poll workers into five Indigenous languages.

Please join IFES’ Facebook Live event, “Promoting the Political Rights of Indigenous Youth,” on August 10 at 9:00 a.m. EDT/UTC-4 to celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples and International Youth Day. IFES will host a discussion with young Indigenous human rights advocates from Guatemala, Libya and Nepal. RSVP here. We hope to see you there!
