Today’s young leaders will be tomorrow’s decision-makers. Developing new generations of active and engaged citizens is key to building democratic stability and future leadership. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) engages young people around the world in a variety of activities designed to foster an understanding of citizens' rights and responsibilities, and create a culture of engagement. Educating young people about democracy empowers and prepares the next generation to have a voice in the way they are governed.

As we celebrate International Youth Day, IFES reaffirms its mission to support citizens' right to participate in their democracy.

For more on youth engagement, please listen to the podcast below featuring Matthew Emery, Research Coordinator for the Center for Applied Research and Learning at IFES. Emery discusses youth participation and social media’s impact in Ukraine since 2010.

In celebration of International Youth Day, IFES hosted a Twitter chat focused on young peoples’ attitudes and perceptions of democracy, as well as youth contributions to their communities around the world. To catch up on the conversation and add your thoughts, please follow #IntlYD2015.
