IFES Announces Winner of 2018 Photography Contest
A photograph depicting an insightful moment of Election Day in Mexico has won the top prize of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) 2018 Photography Contest. It was one of six photos selected as finalists among the more than 80 entries to the democracy-themed competition.
“Taking Notes,” entered by IFES Program Coordinator for the Americas Fernanda Buril, shows a member of Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) taking notes as he observes the voting process in a polling station in Polanco, Mexico City, during Mexico’s 2018 general elections. From June 28-July 1, 2018, a delegation of nine CEP members participated in the Foreign Visitors’ Information Forum 2017-2018 Electoral Process, organized by Mexico’s National Electoral Institute and the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Branch.
Other finalist images illustrated the use of election technology in a remote location in Brazil, a flash mob in support of disability rights in Georgia, a voter education activity and a voter queue in Nepal, and the placement of posters at a female polling station in Pakistan.
Buril will receive a $500 (USD) cash prize, and the winning photo will be featured as the cover of IFES’ 2019 wall calendar. Contest entries may also be used in IFES publications and online.
IFES has sponsored the annual contest since 2009 to encourage the depiction of efforts to promote inclusive and participatory democracy. The contest seeks photographs of individuals taking part in elections or other activities that embody the values of democratic governance and civic engagement. Photos that capture the essence of IFES’ core areas – Electoral Management, Electoral Law, and Participation and Inclusion – are highly favored.
