Angola

With the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Accra in August 2003, Liberians committed themselves to political, rather than military, competition for control of the country’s post-war reconstruction. The presidential election in October 2005 and the run-off in November were both peaceful, and resulted in the election of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. This was the first time that a woman was elected head-of-state in Africa.

Current Projects
Liberia Election Administration Program (LEAP)

Since mid-2004, IFES has worked to support the conduct of an effective and credible electoral process in Liberia. With funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, IFES is providing technical assistance to the National Elections Commission on several fronts, including management of the electoral process, its operations budgets, voter education, and campaign finance. In addition, IFES is working to mitigate electoral conflict through the EVER project.
