Sudan

Following the overthrow of longtime President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, a power-sharing agreement was signed between the military and civilian figures, which created a transitional government and roadmap toward a comprehensive peace agreement. Though progress was made, the transitional peace process stalled with the military takeover on October 25, 2021. Prime Minister Hamdok was removed from office as the Sudanese took to the streets to protest the military’s action. Nevertheless, dialogue between the military and civilian figures to find a solution to the crisis continues. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) remains focused on its principal objective to assist the Sudanese in strengthening governing institutions’ capacity to administer credible elections and a successful democratic transition via work with civil society and academia. IFES previously worked in Sudan from 2009-13 to support election management bodies in conducting national elections and the Southern Kordofan state elections.
