Current Projects
Towards Election Law Reform
IFES aims to clarify and eliminate contradictions in the election law (meeting OSCE standards) and create a more independent, pluralistic election administration in preparation for the 2010 parliamentary elections.
In the summer and fall of 2008, IFES organized and conducted numerous joint stakeholder meetings and Election Law Working Group sessions. Representatives of all eight registered political parties, the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER), Center for Strategic Research (CSR), civil society organizations, and other relevant groups attended. Through a highly participatory process, the Working Group drafted a formal list of suggested amendments and additions to the election law which were officially presented to the CCER, Parliament and Rakhmon Government. Tajikistan's parliament, the Majlisi Oli, is expected to consider reforms to the electoral code in the coming months.
