Iraqis on the streets of Baghdad take a moment to read the draft Constitution prior to Referendum days.

Iraq continues to develop a new political identity as it emerges from conflict with support from its leaders of democratic ideals. With the world watching, its political leadership is encountering a number of serious challenges--such as inter-regional and ideological differences--but the primary issue they must contend with is the uncertain security situation.

Each IFES project plays an important role in addressing this issue; either directly or indirectly and is part of a larger assistance plan to bring peace and stability to the embattled country.

Current Projects

Electoral Technical Assistance to the IHEC of Iraq

Since September 2004, IFES provided ongoing technical electoral assistance to Iraq's electoral authorities. Currently, IFES provides a broad range of operational and advisory assistance to the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) to strengthen the institution, its responsiveness and implementation capacity.

In the upcoming year, Iraqis will determine critical issues such as the composition of their provincial and national governments, regional referenda, and national security agreements at the ballot box. To this end, IFES provides crucial international guidance, support and assistance for Iraq's electoral activities. This program is funded by USAID.
