On May 22, Burkinabe voters will elect Municipal Councilors, who will in turn elect their Mayors and Deputy Mayors. In total, 19,624 seats will be contested in 9,299 electoral districts.
The municipal elections are critical to Burkina Faso’s democratic future, completing an electoral process that was initiated following the resignation of longtime President Blaise Compaore in October 2014.
