The audit of the Afghan presidential runoff election sparked meaningful conversations about the importance of defining international standards for audit processes. Drawing on their extensive involvement in several recent election audits in developing democracies, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and Democracy International (DI) released a joint white paper that identifies best practices for election audits. At the launch event, panelists discussed the 2014 election and its aftermath, important standards for election audits, and the future of elections in Afghanistan. DI CEO Glenn Cowan and IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney provided opening remarks. Erica Shein, IFES Applied Research and Learning Manager, moderated the panel, which included DI Director of Programs Jed Ober, IFES Director of the Center for Applied Research and Learning Chad Vickery and United Nation Development Programme Lead Electoral Advisor Niall McCann.
