IFES and CEPPS Partners Launch Countering Disinformation Guide
On April 28, 2021, the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening (CEPPS) launched the Countering Disinformation Guide, created in partnership by the CEPPS core partners: the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI). The guide was created with funding from United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Global Elections and Political Transitions Award for use by practitioners, donors, political leaders and civil society organizations around the world, to highlight the work being done to counter disinformation and promote information integrity. This first-of-its-kind resource includes a global database of organizations, projects and donors working on and supporting these efforts.
Addressing disinformation requires a whole-of society approach where institutions and platforms contribute the resources required to address disinformation in congruence with civil society’s credibility. A focus on elections alone will not achieve a healthy information environment; developing norms, standards, research approaches and regulatory frameworks are necessary for healthy information ecosystems as well as to combat disinformation and other harmful content. Strengthening information integrity is critical to ensure democracy can thrive.
