Seeking to bring awareness to the issues young people face, the United Nations declared August 12 International Youth Day (IYD) in 2000. This year, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) honors young champions and showcases the pivotal role young people play in developing and sustaining democratic processes in their communities by celebrating IYD with a monthlong social media campaign. IYD 2019 focuses on transforming education and bringing to light the incredible impact inclusive and equitable education has on young people’s lives and the democratic health of their countries.

IFES’ youth programming seeks to bolster young people’s knowledge of their civic rights and responsibilities and empower them to participate in the democratic process. As such, young people become disseminators of information and educators in their communities as they increase their civic engagement and participation. By focusing on a two-pronged approach of theoretical learning and practical skills building, IFES supports the development of global young leaders and active citizenship to sustain democracy worldwide.
