IFES Congratulates Pakistan on Historic Transfer of Power

Published

The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) congratulates Pakistan on its first transfer of power between two democratically elected civilian governments after completion of a full term. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and newly-elected members of the National Assembly were sworn in on June 1, 2013. Sharif officially takes office today, June 5, 2013.

IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney traveled to Pakistan to witness the general elections held on May 11, 2013.

“The conduct of the elections and the historic transfer of power are a significant step forward for Pakistan,” said Sweeney. “The road ahead will present many challenges and opportunities, as the country continues to strengthen democratic practices, including credible electoral processes that are fully inclusive and embraced by all Pakistanis.”
