At the University of Dhaka, 40 students are engaged in Democracy: From Theory to Practice, a course that strengthens understanding of democracy to engender constructive democratic engagement.
In Bangladesh, the course was adapted to center democratic theory and praxis from the Global South and the rich democratic traditions in South Asia and Bangladesh. This challenges the narrative that democracy is a one-size-fits-all solution or an imported concept irrelevant to non-Western concepts.
Bangladesh is one of multiple countries that have tailored this course to their cultures. Dozens of universities across Ukraine, Armenia, and Georgia teach this course—designed via the Strengthening Engagement through Education for Democracy (SEED) approach—to support informed, mindful, and active civic participation.
