International Foundation for Electoral Systems Youth Specialist Ashley Law and Senior Global Inclusion Advisor Virginia Atkinson co-authored “Positive Youth Development: A Bridge to Connect Civic Education and Sustainable Development,” published in the Journal of Youth Development.

The article argues that civic education programs that apply a positive youth development (PYD) approach can shape and inform how young people develop democratic identities and habits, directly linking these identities and behaviors to building inclusive and sustainable democracies. In the article, Law and Atkinson discuss good practices and lessons learned in global civic education programs that demonstrate the use of a PYD approach. To link PYD approaches to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the article also identifies areas to consider for the expansion and future of civic education programs.
