IFES Signs Global Disability Summit Charter for Change
On July 24, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, the International Disability Alliance and the Government of Kenya will host the first-ever Global Disability Summit. IFES, represented by IFES President Bill Sweeney, will participate and has signed the Charter for Change, the summit’s principal legacy document outlining actions that must be taken to ensure the rights, freedoms, dignity and inclusion for all persons with disabilities.

Zimbabwean Civil Society Organizations Promote Credible, Inclusive Elections
Zimbabwe will hold its much-anticipated harmonized elections on July 30, when citizens will vote for president, 201 constituency seats in the National Assembly, and seats in the urban and rural local authorities. IFES has been working to strengthen the capacity of Zimbabwean civil society organizations and community-based organizations to promote credible, inclusive and transparent elections.

Papua New Guinea Develops Strategic Plan Ahead of 2022 National Election
The Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission (PNGEC), with the support of IFES, conducted its strategic planning process from October 2017 to March 2018 with the aim of developing its 2018-2022 Corporate Plan. The plan will guide the PNGEC over the next five years through its preparation for the 2022 national election and implementation of long-term civic education, inclusion and legal reform initiatives.

Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. From June 24 through July 8, citizens of Papua New Guinea will directly elect 111 members of the National Parliament (MPs). The MPs will be selected from among 3,340 candidates, which include representatives of 45 political parties and 2,006 independent candidates.

Elections in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville: 2015 General Elections
The May 2015 general elections mark the third elections for the House of Representatives for the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG), and the fourth elections for the President (including the by-election of 2008) since the Bougainville Peace Agreement was signed in August 2001. The agreement provided for elections to establish the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, which was formed after elections in 2005.

On May 7, 2014, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
