Elections Adviser Alan Wall to Receive 2019 IFES Baxter Award

IFES is pleased to announce that Alan Wall, a senior elections adviser and former IFES chief of party, is the recipient of the 2019 Joe C. Baxter Award, after being unanimously selected by IFES’ current chiefs of party. The annual Baxter Award recognizes the contributions of election professionals whose skills and dedication to the field of election administration epitomize the mission of IFES and embody the spirit of former IFES Senior Adviser for Election Administration Joe C. Elections in Timor-Leste: 2018 Early Parliamentary Elections

On May 12, Timor-Leste held elections for all 65 seats in the National Parliament. The last parliamentary elections were held on July 22, 2017, and, despite lengthy negotiations, no party was able to form a majority coalition. The president of the Republic of Timor-Leste dissolved the National Parliament on January 26, 2018, making a new election necessary. To help you understand this important electoral process, IFES provides Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Elections in Timor-Leste: 2018 Early Parliamentary Elections.

Timor-Leste Parliamentary Elections, July 2017: Disability Access Monitoring

For Timor-Leste's 2017 presidential and parliamentary elections, IFES supported local disabled people’s organization Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan (RHTO) to conduct disability access monitoring. For the parliamentary elections, RHTO deployed access monitors in every municipality and deployed monitors in the capital city for the presidential election. RHTO detailed their observations in the report, "Timor-Leste Parliamentary Elections, July 2017: Disability Access Monitoring,"

Elections in Timor-Leste: 2017 Presidential Elections

On March 20, Timorese citizens will vote to elect their next president. Eight candidates will by vying for the presidency in this election. If no candidate receives at least 50 percent plus one of the valid votes in the first round, a second round will be held on April 20, 2017. The 2017 presidential election is the first national election to be managed by the National Election Commission and Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration without substantial logistical support from the United Nations.

AGENDA Organizes a Workshop on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at Regional Conference

As part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Civil Society Conference/ASEAN People’s Forum in Dili, Timor-Leste, the ASEAN General Election Network for Disability Access (AGENDA) organized a thematic workshop, entitled “A More Inclusive ASEAN Community: Upholding the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to Participate in Public Life,” on August 4, 2016. The workshop was led by representatives from four Southeast Asian countries highlighting their experiences and best practices of upholding the rights of persons with disabilities to participate as full and equal citizens in their country.
