Ethiopia Holds Referendum to Determine Statehood for Sidama Zone
Residents of Ethiopia's Sidama Zone voted in a referendum for regional autonomy on November 20. With results demonstrating that approximately 98.5 percent voted in support of statehood, Sidama will be the first new state since the establishment of the current nine-state federation in the 1990s.

Youth Leadership, Conflict Mitigation and Commuting in Dhaka
The use of violence to resolve conflict in Bangladesh has unfortunately crept into student politics and university life. In July, IFES held a "People Against Violence Everywhere" (PAVE) master training for nine Dhaka University students, who are now certified to lead program trainings. PAVE highlights ways to constructively mitigate and resolve conflict and offers young Bangladeshis peaceful tools as alternatives to violence.

Otito Greg-Obi Elected to Executive Committee of U.S Civil Society Working Group on Women, Peace and Security
On May 20, IFES Gender Program Coordinator Otito Greg-Obi was elected to the 2019-20 Executive Committee of the United States Civil Society Working Group (CSWG) on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). The CSWG is a nonpartisan, collaborative network of civil society organizations that provides technical assistance to governmental agencies seeking to integrate the WPS agenda into national security efforts.

Guatemalan Political Parties Commit to a Transparent, Ethical and Peaceful Electoral Process
The “Agreement for a Transparent, Ethical and Peaceful Electoral Process” was signed on March 11 by representatives of 18 of the 28 political parties that will participate in Guatemala’s upcoming elections. The agreement was an outcome of the Electoral Violence Prevention Plan developed by Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), with the support of IFES.
