Images from IFES-Indonesia Photo Contest Celebrating Acehs Political Participation
In support of Aceh's Independent Election Commission's (KIP) media center activities, IFES-Indonesia commissioned a photo competition to highlight some of the remarkable moments seen during the first elections where Acehnese political parties participated alongside national parties in local legislative elections. These elections were held in April 2009. The entries are from photojournalists, citizens and observers. The panel of judges consisted of a KIP Commissioner, IFES staff and a professional Jakarta based photojournalist. The award ceremony was a widely covered event by Aceh's print and TV media.

IFES Survey on Indonesian Political Attitudes Reveals Satisfaction with Democracy, Lack of Political Information
JAKARTA – More than one year after the 2009 presidential and parliamentary elections, a majority of Indonesians believe that the country is headed in the right direction and a clear majority expresses support for democracy in Indonesia. Still, a significant majority of Indonesians lack information on critical aspects of the election process for the ongoing local elections.

AGENDA: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers
On February 1 and 2, over 100 representatives from disabled persons' organizations, civil society, election management bodies and government in Southeast Asia, as well as online viewers from around the world, gathered for the first-ever conference in Southeast Asia to promote the equal and full participation of persons with disabilities in democratic processes. The event was hosted by the ASEAN General Election Network for Disability Access (AGENDA), a network of Southeast Asian organizations focused on advancing the rights of persons with disabilities that IFES helped create.

Media Centers: Serving Democracy Through the Press
As the global leader in democracy promotion, IFES has helped election management bodies (EMBs) around the world set up media centers to facilitate the flow of information and enhance transparency in the electoral process. A media center allows EMBs, the authoritative sources of election news, to distribute real-time information to local and foreign journalists, including updates on the progress of voting and preliminary announcements of election results. For elections, independent media serve to underscore key issues, shed light on candidates and political parties, provide voter education and keep the population updated on electoral developments.

On July 11, 2012, voters in Jakarta, Indonesia, cast their ballots for the capital city's next governor. This governorship is considered one of the most important directly-elected positions in the country since Jakarta is seen as a leader in economic growth and development for the rest of the nation.
