IFES Q&A with Former Chief Election Commissioner of India Dr. SY Quraishi
As a former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Dr. SY Quraishi has a deep understanding of the intricacies of how the world’s largest democracy works. He also has more than 35 years of experience in civil service. Dr. Quraishi is well known in India and abroad as a development thinker, for his inclusive style of leadership, and for bringing together wide varieties of groups and institutions to achieve the common objectives of development. In this Q&A, Dr. Quraishi discusses challenges the Election Commission of India (ECI) faces in preparing to conduct credible elections and shares lessons learned. India’s five-week general elections started on April 7.

Elections in Cambodia See Major Parties Merge, Compete for Votes
On Sunday, July 28 Cambodians cast ballots for 123 members of the National Assembly. This race saw the merger of two major opposition parties, the Sam Rainsy Party and the Human Rights Party, into the Cambodia National Rescue Party. This new, larger party was led by Sam Rainsy, a self-exiled leader who recently returned to Cambodia after receiving a Royal Pardon for various convictions. A Snapshot of the 2013 Midterm Elections in the Philippines
The Philippines held midterm elections on May 13, 2013. These polls marked the second time a nationwide automated election system was used. In addition to fine-tuning the technology used during the election, the Philippine Commission on Elections (COMELEC) also implemented a continuous voter registration process and a general registration in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Witnessing Pakistan’s Historic Election
Pakistan held general elections on May 11, 2013, marking the first time in the nation's history that a civilian government has carried out the full length of its term and handed power to another civilian government. A number of improvements were made ahead of the election to ensure a more credible and transparent poll. This included updating the voter list, increasing the number of polling stations and expanding communication with the public. Investing in Common Aspirations: Lewis Madanick on the Former Eastern Bloc, Democracy and Humanity
Lewis Madanick, Program Manager at Open World Leadership Center, has watched Eastern Europe’s rocky to transition to democracy. A child of the Cold War and a student of Russian/Soviet history, he has a deep interest in global politics and the role of the individual in democracy. While at IFES from 1999-2000, Madanick served as Program Officer for Russia. He now works to build ties between emerging leaders in Eurasia and the United States. A week after the death of Margaret Thatcher – who recognized the first Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev as reform-oriented – Madanick comments on the march of democracy in former Eastern Bloc.
