Know Your Rights

“Know Your Rights,” written by Deputy National Director of the Legal Resource Centre Ms. Shehnaz Meer and published by Macmillan Boleswa informs South Africans of the rights they will soon be entitled to following the April 27th 1994 ushering in of the new Constitution. After an introduction explaining the importance of this event, Meer provides explanations of the new rights South Africans will soon have in the vernacular complete with illustrations. Also provided is information regarding the protection of these rights by local and state offices.

Hour for Democracy Songbook


“The Hour for Democracy Songbook” is a compilation of songs complete with lyrics focusing on the theme of democracy, change, and the upcoming April 1994 elections in South Africa. Published by the Institute for Contextual Theology, this songbook also includes a message from Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who urges the people of South Africa to exercise their right to vote.

List of Media Projects


The IFEE Media Commission Evaluation Workshop held on 24-26 May 1994 published a list of media projects undertaken as part of IFEE’s voter education media programme.  Included on the list are print media projects such as the comic book “Our Time to Choose” and audio visual materials such as the “What is Democracy” video.  A bulk of the material is focused around the slogan “Heal Our Land.” The phrase was the theme of a television series, educational audio cassettes and was also found on t-shirts, bumper stickers and posters.

Streetwise


The spring 1989 publication of “Streetwise” covers issues such as the construction of a constitution and “Street Law,” a program aimed at teaching youth about their civil liberties and rights.  This Apartheid era publication employs fiction and comic strips to express its views on the political process in South Africa.

Signed by Third World Christians from seven nations, “The Road to Damascus” attempts to lay bare the historical and political roots of the conflict between Christians, affirms the faith of poor and oppressed Christians in these countries, condemns the sins of the oppressing parties, and calls for a conversion to Christianity to those who have strayed from the faith. Published by Skoatville Publishers, the nations who have signed this document are South Africa, Namibia, South Korea, the Philippines, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.

Thukela Local Government Election 29 May 1996

In preparation for the Thuleka local government elections on May 29th 1996, this newsletter was distributed in order to educate Thuleka residents to participate and vote. Information such as voting rules and instructions and functions of the offices up for election are supplemented with illustrations reinforcing this basic elections knowledge. This newsletter was published by the Institute for Democracy in Africa in 1996 and is written in both English and Zulu.
