Kosovo

Kosovo’s recent political instability and ongoing geopolitical challenges present obstacles for strengthening its democracy. Despite these factors, Kosovo has made strides in delivering credible elections and promoting good governance. IFES is currently partnering with civil society in Kosovo to shift incentives around implementation of international and regional anti-corruption standards and commitments, including those issued by the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) and the European Union, including on challenges such as judicial integrity and transparent political finance. IFES has supported elections in Kosovo via political and campaign finance monitoring, public outreach, civil society partnerships and civic education since 1998.

Within the last 15 years, IFES supported Kosovo during its first democratically run elections; improved electoral access and inclusion for disadvantaged groups; and supported transparent management of electoral processes. Most recently, IFES provided targeted technical assistance to the Central Election Commission and the Election Complaints and Appeals Panel to improve capacities to implement mandates in line with international standards and practices. Currently, IFES’ programming in Kosovo centers around the fight against corruption, with a focus on leveraging peer exchanges and international commitments to strengthen civil society advocacy.
