Following Mexico's 2018 elections, the country's Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Branch (TEPJF) is exploring judicial responses to disinformation in elections and recently established a specialized chamber with a focus on media and campaign finance violations. Join IFES and Justice José Luis Vargas Valdez for a conversation on emerging approaches to disinformation and social media in elections, both in Mexico and worldwide.
IFES President and CEO Tony Banbury will provide opening remarks, and Director of IFES' Center for Applied Research and Learning Erica Shein will moderate a Q&A with Justice Vargas Valdez.
Justice Vargas Valdez is a judge at the TEPJF and author of a Venice Commission study on social media in elections. Previously, he was head of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Electoral Offenses of the Attorney-General of the Republic. He is a member of the Venice Commission and senior consultant on election offenses and the resolution of legal disputes for the Organization of American States. He has participated in various election observation missions, including in the United States.
